Debra Bass, who earned a Ph.D. from Drew University in Old Testament Studies, has extensive experience in higher education and the local church. She has served in the ministry of the A.M.E. Zion Church for 40 years, including pastoring for 19 years in the New Jersey and N. Alabama Conferences. She currently serves as the Dean of Course of Studies for the N. Alabama Conference. She has held a number of positions within the Church and ecumenical community including: Director of Ethnic Cooperation and Institutional Ministries; Pennsylvania Council of Churches, Harrisburg, PA; and Executive Director Ohio Council of Churches, Columbus,
In addition to serving as an adjunct professor at Hood Theological Seminary’s Greenville Campus, she is a tenured Associate Professor at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.. Before accepting a position in the religion department at Stillman, she served as a full time professor at Miles College, where she was once voted teacher of the year.
She has written extensively. Among her many publications are God Comforts Israel: the Message and Audience of Isaiah 40-55 and Preaching through the Liturgical Year and other Occasions. She is currently writing a book titled, Journaling Through the Year with God: a Believer Talks to God about Daily Encounters.
Bass is the widow of C.M.E. Church Bishop Richard O. Bass. The have one son, Joshua Daniel Bass. She has traveled all over the world and has studied six languages (Hebrew, Greek, Italian, French, German, Latin).
